What is Coronary Heart Disease (CHD)?

CHD is a condition in which a waxy substance called plaque (plak) builds up on the inner walls of the heart, leading to a narrowing of the small blood vessels (coronary arteries) that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.

It is one of leading cause of death globally for both men and women.

Prevention and Control


  • Control your weight through healthy diet and Regular exercising.
  •  Healthy Diet: Eat foods with low sodium (salt), no added sugars, no solid fats (saturated fats and transfatty fats), and no refined grains. Eat foods like: Fruits/Vegetables, fatfree/low fat dairy products, protein foods, lean meat, poultry without skin, sea food, nuts, seeds, peas and beans. 
  •  Regular Exercising: Take 15-30 minute walks daily or enroll in exercise groups. (Consult with your doctor on kinds of exercise best suited to you.
  •  Quit Smoking: You can get help from your doctor, enroll in quit smoking groups/classes close to you or call quit smoking help lines.
  •  Avoid Second Hand Smoke: Which is to avoid being in close proximity with someone that smokes. 
  • Take all prescribed medication.  
  • Go for regular medical check-ups.
